Homer Harbor

Our harbor here in Homer, Alaska is where our small boat fisherman come to unload their catch daily. Citizen Salmon Alaska buys salmon in Homer from Seine fisherman. Seine fishing uses two boats (one larger boat and one small skiff) working in tandem to net the salmon in the area they fish. The skiff holds one end of the net close to shore, and after soaking their net for 45 minutes, both boats begin to close the net. The skiff pulls the net around in a circle, bringing it back to the big boat, and they slowly close the bottom of the net like a purse, called “purse seining”, gently catching the salmon inside. Seine fishing is the least stressful to the salmon of all forms of commercial fishing. Less stress to the fish equals higher quality meat.
